Reliance Industries Demo LTE-TDD In India

Qualcomm, one of Indian BWA Auction Winner for 4 circle , Wireless Broadband Business Services Pvt Ltd, the auctions held earlier this year, yesterday demonstrated LTE TDD at 2.3 GHz in Gurgaon, India. The demo, done with Ericsson, live streamed multiple high definition video feeds to a mobile van in Gurgaon, using Qualcomm chip-set based USB dongles.

Qualcomm has won 20 MHz of spectrum in Delhi, Mumbai, Kerala and Haryana, at a price of Rs. 4912.54 crore in total. Among these circles, it has paid Rs. 2292.95 crore. Qualcomm is looking to exit this venture now. Interestingly, Kanwalinder Singh, President (India and South Asia) at Qualcomm told Business Line that Tulip Telecom and Global Holdings may also exit the venture.

Additionally, Reliance Industries also showcased LTE-TDD 4G technology at the Reliance Corporate Park, in Navi Mumbai. In the test environment, the company says it got healthy balanced peak rates of 80 Mbps in the downlink and 20 Mbps in the uplink for the specified configuration/setup. As with the Gurgaon demo, they demonstrated live streaming of TV content on the move, with a handover between base stations.They got 80Mbps download speed when travelling at a speed of 70Km per an hour.But now it could not be completely call as 4G.Because the standard for 4G now raised to 100Mbps when traveling and 1gbps while stationary.

Qualcomm and Ericsson Demonstrate LTE TDD in India

Wireless Broadband Business Services Private Limited, one of Qualcomm Incorporated’s India LTE Venture entities, and Ericsson today successfully demonstrated LTE TDD mobility at 2.3 GHz in an outdoor environment in India. This demonstration is part of Qualcomm’s previously stated plan for its LTE Venture to accelerate the deployment of LTE in concert with 3G to drive the growth of mobile broadband in India.

The demonstration live streamed multiple high-definition video feeds to a mobile van in the Gurgaon area, showing a seamless hand off between base stations while maintaining session continuity. The demonstration was carried out by using Radio Access Network (RAN) and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) solutions from Ericsson, and USB dongles based on Qualcomm’s MDM9x00 multimode chipset that supports both LTE and 3G.

Qualcomm won one slot of 20 MHz TDD spectrum in India’s 2.3 GHz band covering the key telecom circles of Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala in the BWA auction earlier this year. In July 2010, Qualcomm announced Global Holding Corporation and Tulip Telecom as initial shareholders for its India LTE Venture. The outdoor mobility demonstration is a major step towards Qualcomm’s earlier announcement that the venture would accelerate ecosystem readiness and deployment of LTE TDD. The venture will work towards the next milestones of 3G-LTE interoperability trials in 2011 and the commercial availability of LTE TDD infrastructure, chipsets and devices. Qualcomm continues to execute on its previously stated plan for the India LTE Venture and expects to attract one or more experienced 3G HSPA and/or EV-DO operator(s) for the construction of an LTE network in compliance with the Indian government’s roll-out requirements for the BWA spectrum, and then to exit the venture

Qualcomm introduces new 3G and 4G chipsets

Major player Qualcomm said it has started sampling the first chipsets to support dual carrier HSPA+ and multi-mode 3G/LTE. MDM9600 and MDM9200 chipsets will allow mass market commercial deployment of two nextgen network technologies for better data capabilities for mobile devices.LTE - which stands for long term evolution - is supported by a large number of network operators, infrastructure vendors and handset manufacturers. Commercial launches of these devices using Qualcomm chipsets will begin during the second half of 2010.

Potential customers include Japan's Emobile and Telstra, while Qualcomm is also working with Huawei, Novatel, Sierra Wireless and LTE.

Telstra will begin deploying dual carrier HSPA+ tech in the Next G network by the end of this year.Novatel Wireless said it is evaluating the Qualcomm chipsets. It will deliver a large range of HSPA+ and LTE wireless modems and modules.MDM 9200 supports UMTS, HSPA+ and LTE, while the MDM 9600 supports CDMA 2000, EV-DO Rev B, SV-DO, SV-LTE, UMTS, HSPA+ and LTE.

They can support orthoganal frequency division multiple access with peak rates of 100Mbps on the downlink and 50Mbps on the uplink.

Qualcomm TD-LTE Partners

Qualcomm TD-LTE Partners-Global Holding Corporation and Tulip Telecom
Qualcomm has finalized initial shareholders for its LTE (Long Term Evolution) services venture in India.

Qualcomm will have a 74 percent stake in the venture, while two Indian companies -- Global Holding Corporation and Tulip Telecom -- will hold 13 percent each. The deal still requires government approval, Qualcomm said.Global Holding is in the shared mobile infrastructure business while Tulip is an enterprise communications service provider. Tulip said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange that it will be investing about 1.4 billion Indian rupees (US$30 million) for its stake in the joint venture.

The company said in its statement on Friday that it expects to attract one or more experienced 3G HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) or EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) operators into the venture for construction of an LTE network, in compliance with the Indian government's roll-out requirements for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum, and then exit the venture.

In an auction of BWA spectrum earlier this year, the Indian government auctioned two blocks of 20MHz unpaired spectrum in the 2.3GHz band in each of the 22 service areas in the country. There were 11 bidders in the auction.

Qualcomm won a total of four slots across four service areas. Among the four slots were one each in Mumbai and Delhi, which are considered as large markets for broadband and mobile services.

Qualcomm said in March that it was bidding in the auction to promote the LTE standard. In line with Indian rules, it will form a joint venture with Indian partners to set up a LTE network, and will exit the venture later, the company said at the time.

Qualcomm Unveils LTE Plans for India

Qualcomm Inc. shook up the mobile broadband market today with plans to bid for 2.3GHz spectrum in the upcoming auction in India. If successful, the company plans to introduce TD-LTE technology into the Indian market with the help of local network operator partners. The move is interesting on many levels if Qualcomm is successful, though there are many hurdles for the company to leap before it can achieve its aims.

The main potential impact of this move is that it could help create a global market for TD-LTE technology, which, currently, has found significant support only in China -- China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL), specifically. (See Motorola's Shanghai Hope and China Mobile Fast-Tracks TD-LTE .)

A new face for 2.3GHz in India
If Qualcomm is successful, it would provide a whole new dimension to the Indian mobile market, and likely force the current wireless service providers, such as Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Mumbai: BHARTIARTL), Reliance Communications Ltd. , Tata Teleservices Ltd. , and Vodafone Essar , to rethink their strategies.

Qualcomm plans to bid for spectrum in the BWA (broadband wireless access) auction, where an unpaired slot of 20MHz in the 2.3GHz band is available in each of India's service circles. (See A Guide to India's Telecom Market to find out more about the circles, including a map.)

Until now, the BWA spectrum had been considered of interest to WiMax service providers: Bringing TD-LTE into the equation provides a whole new slant on what could be done with that spectrum, because the technology is capable, theoretically, of delivering downlink connections of 100 Mbit/s or more. Having such capabilities would enhance the potential for broadband service uptake in India, something the country's government is keen to promote.

Two slots of 20MHz spectrum are available in each circle in the 2.3GHz band. An additional slot has already been reserved in each circle for the state-owned carriers, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) .

Qualcomm won LTE Spectrum in India

Qualcomm has won provisional spectrum in four regions in India following an auction.

Unpaired spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala is more or less now in the ownership of the company, pending approval of the Indian government. The US company says it now plans to roll out a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network, complementing existing 3G HSPA and EV-DO mobile phone networks in the regions.

Qualcomm will soon announce Indian partners for the roll-out, in compliance with India's Foreign Direct Investment regulations. Apparently Qualcomm's goal is to cooperate with one or more operators already using either HSPA or EV-DO in a joint venture to build an LTE network. It would leave the venture as soon as the network has been implemented. The 20 MHz spectrum slot will cost Qualcomm US$1,04 billion, no amount was mentioned concerning the planned network venture.

"Our bidding objective was to secure an enabling role in the continued success of Indian operators with 3G and beyond, and we are extremely gratified we met that objective. With its ecosystem partners, Qualcomm will now foster the deployment of LTE, so Indian consumers can enjoy the benefits of 3G now and 3G plus LTE in the future", stated Kanwalinder Singh, president of Qualcomm India and South Asia.

Qualcomm's plans can be seen as another nail in WiMax's coffin. Analysts at WiseHarbor recently predicted LTE will rule the world by 2020 and replicate the success of GSM and CDMA, whereas WiMax is set to go the path of dinosaurs. Simply put, LTE is the 4G mobile phone standard and successor of UMTS and WCDMA, not WiMax, despite companies involved with WiMax trying to pitch it as 4G.
